No X-ray lookback at Ennis GH

The HSE has said that it had consulted outside experts before it ruled out a review of all X-rays read at Ennis General Hospital last year.

The call for a widescale review came from the family of Ann Moriarty (53), who died of breast cancer last April, just months after being told her chest X-rays taken at the Ennis hospital were normal, when this was not the case, according to the Irish Times.

The X-rays had been performed in June and August last year after the mother of one, who was in remission from breast cancer after having had a mastectomy at Dublin's St James's Hospital in 2005, presented feeling unwell.

Ballynacally Fine Gael TD Pat Breen backed his call for an independent inquiry. "Public confidence must be restored that other X-rays taken at Ennis have not also been misread," he said.

Ann Moriarty, aged 53, died on April 28, 2008, Cahercalla Community Hospital, Ennis, of metastatic breast cancer. In April 2007, she had been given the all clear.

Funding For Judo Club

The Department of Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs has allocated top-up funding of EUR1,200 to the Ennis West Judo Club.

The club is one of 63 organisations in or serving RAPID areas to be allocated top-up funding following the approval of funds under the Sports Capital Programme 2008 in July.

Minister of State and Clare T.D., Mr. Tony Killeen commented, ‘The Sports Capital and RAPID Programmes have played a major role in the development of sport in this County by allocating funding towards the provision of sports facilities. By doing so, the Programmes are assisting the fantastic efforts of both the volunteers who are the backbone of sport and also the many thousands who play sport, at whatever level'.
