Road improvements earmarked for Down

Over £6.3m is to be invested in road improvements for the Down area this year, it has been announced.

Transport Minister Conor Murphy said works would be progressed ob A24 Shore Road, Kilclief, Strangford, which will improve forward visibility on this stretch of carriageway, reports build.ie.

Junction improvements will also be carried out on the Magheralone Road, Annacloy to increase sightline visibility.

Eight swine flu case confirmed in Northern Ireland

Another case of swine flu has been confirmed in Northern Ireland, bringing the total number of cases there to eight.

The latest diagnosis relates to a woman who had recently returned from the US. She has mild flu symptoms and is recovering at home.

The Northern Ireland Public Health Agency is arranging a follow-up of people who were in close contact with her since she developed symptoms.

Man stabbed in Lisburn

A young man is fighting for his life today after being stabbed during a street row in Northern Ireland, reports the Irish Times.

Three men are being questioned over the incident in Lisburn which police are treating as attempted murder. The 20-year-old victim was stabbed in the body during the attack at Millbrook Road shortly before 2am.

Another 18-year-old man was also stabbed in the side but his injuries are not thought to be life-threatening. Police said they arrested three men, aged 23, 21 and 20 who are helping with their inquiries.

Three killed in Down air accident

Three men killed in a plane crash in the North last night were trying to land just miles from their homes, it emerged today.

The light aircraft came down in misty conditions in a field near the County Down harbour town of Kilkeel (left), just after 9pm yesterday.

One man onboard was aged 53 while the other two were both aged 24, according to the Irish Times. It is understood they are all from the Annalong area of Co Down, about six miles away from the crash site, near the Belmont Road.

Mayo hurling boss steps down

Martin Brennan has resigned from his position as manager of the Mayo senior hurling squad.

The departure follows a heavy defeat for the Connacht side at the hands of Down in last week's Christy Ring Cup semi-final.

Massive jobs boost for Down

A €116m plan to transform the seafront at one of the North’s most popular coastal towns will create around 1,750 jobs, it was announced today.

Up to 1,000 posts will be generated in the construction phase of the development fronting Bangor’s marina, with an additional 750 permanent jobs on offer when the commercial and entertainment facilities are finished.

A new 150-bedroom hotel, 60 shops, office units, an outdoor arts venue and a promenade are included in the regeneration plans for the Queen’s Parade area.

7th Swine Flu case detected in Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland Health Minister Michael McGimpsey (left) has said one more case of swine flu has been confirmed.

This brings the total number of Northern Ireland cases to seven, reports RTE News. The seventh case is in a male who was a contact of a previously confirmed case. He has mild flu symptoms and is recovering at home.

The Public Health Agency is arranging a follow-up of people who were in close contact with him since he developed symptoms.

Roscrea remembers Aisling Butler

A memorial mass has been held in Roscrea this evening for Dr Aisling Butler (left), one of the Irish passengers on the Air france jet that crashed last week.

The 26-year-old was a native of Ballinakill in Roscrea, RTE News reports. Ms Butler and her two friends, Jane Deasy from Dublin and Eithne Walls from Down, were all passengers on the plane which disappeared while travelling from Rio De Janeiro to Paris.
